All Buzz, No Sting
I spotted my first “Cicada killer” of the summer, yesterday. They look like something you better get the hornet spray out for, but they’re really harmless unless you get the female seriously mad. The first year we saw them, I admit I wasn’t happy about having them take up residence in the front yard, but after doing a little research, and learning that they’re more interested in cicadas than my arm or leg; I’ve grown to like them in an odd, insect sort of way.
I took this picture of a female dragging a cicada up a birch tree. (you can see the cicada underneath her) She uses her sting to paralyze her prey rather than to defend her nest. The males cannot sting.
