Cattail – Scientific name: Typha – What we called them: “Punks”

Every time I see a cattail, I want to dry it out and light it with a match. We did this all the time when we were kids. They would burn forever; supposedly keeping the mosquitoes away. To this day if I smell a cattail, it takes me back to my parents driveway on a hot summer evening.

What a great picture! Geographical differences are interesting. We always called them cat tails. Punks were the sticks we used in our driveway to light the sparklers on the 4th of July.

  3. We had alot of cattails around my house when I grew up. A neighbor told us that when he was a kid, they actually had a recipe for cattails.
