The Moon

One Giant Leap

This is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
– Neil Armstrong 1930-2012

Well said, Mr. Borman

“When you’re finally up on the moon, looking back at the earth, all these differences and nationalistic traits are pretty well going to blend and you’re going to get a concept that maybe this is really one world and why the hell can’t we learn to live together like decent people?”

NASA Astronaut – Frank Borman

When you can’t choose just one….

One photo might be good, but more than one might be great.

Lookin’ Good, Moon

The Moon, according to The earth’s natural satellite, orbiting the earth at a mean distance of 238,857 miles (384,393 km) and having a diameter of 2160 miles (3476 km).

The Moon, according to me: Awe-inspiring, Wondrous, Dazzling.

Nice job again tonight, Moon. Thanks.

It doesn’t try to impress; it just does

I like the moon. It’s consistent. It’s the same moon if you’re in Indiana or China. Last night was a full moon. I set up the tripod, put the big lens on and waited……

It was worth the wait. I watched it come up through the trees.

And then there it was in all its lunar glory.

Goodnight, Moon.

Waning Waxing Crescent?

Crescent Moon

When I look in the sky and see the moon bright and clear, the first thing that comes to mind is “I need to get my camera!” I think I can honestly say I’ve never spoken the words “What a beautiful waxing moon it is tonight.” That’s not to say it isn’t a beautiful waxing moon. I just have no idea what it means. Luckily for me, the Internet is at our disposal. Thanks to, I feel more educated already.

Waning Moon — The term used to describe the period of the Moon as it moves from a Full Moon to a New Moon, decreasing in visibility with respect to an Earth-bound observer.

Waxing Moon — The term used to describe the period of the Moon as it moves from a New Moon to a Full Moon, increasing in visibility with respect to an Earth-bound observer.

Crescent Moon — The famous image of the Moon frequently used in the media, consisting of only a thin crescent slice of the Moon being visible from Earth. This phase of the moon occurs just after the New Moon phase, which is also known as Dark of the Moon. There is also a Crescent Moon phase just prior to the next New Moon as well.

06/01/12 – If I can photograph the craters on the moon, just how large are they?

Dancing with the moon

I knew there would be just about a half moon tonight, which I find way more interesting than a full moon. You can see more texture, craters, shadows, etc with a half or crescent moon. It was a little bit of a dance out there tonight to get a good shot. Clouds rolled in and out covering or partially covering my bright, shiny subject in the sky. I liked the shots of the clouds covering part of the moon, but to be able to see the detail in the clear shots makes me a happy photog!

A little cloud cover to make an interesting photo

And a little more cloud cover

Then the clouds blew away and there was my clear shot.

The Moon

It was purely by chance that I started photographing the moon. I had gotten a new lens for my birthday and wanted to see just how far it would reach. Once I saw the craters and textures up close, I was hooked.

All shots taken using a Canon 100-400mm Lens
